My thoughts after studying Audre Lorde’s “The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House”. Raw excerpt from my sociology journal.
She says we should acknowledge our differences, not pretend to not see them. “I don’t see race. I don’t see class. I treat you like anyone else.” You mean you assume they’re like you, not that you are like them, have had their experiences, and have struggled in the same way or had the same privileges. When you acknowledge something you are aware of it, and when you are aware of something your awareness informs everything you do. But more amazing is the idea that acknowledging our difference makes us a stronger unit rather than dividing us. As long as we view all of our differences without worshiping some over others we can use those differences to build a stronger society. It is inclusive. It is built by using everyone’s unique perspective and intelligence based on their experience. I never thought of it that way (other than the inclusivity part).
