Some time ago a friend mentioned having a special teacup she thought I might like. “It’s purple and has a lotus on it!” she exclaimed. Purple is my favorite color, and lotus!!!!, so of course I agreed without hesitation. Then I forgot about our conversation.
Today I went to the post office and found this waiting for me:

The teacup and saucer belonged to her chosen mother, someone who was very special to her. That she would entrust such a precious item to me is an honor beyond words. And the cup is far more beautiful than I imagined it would be.
In the note she enclosed with the cup, she said she hopes I enjoy many relaxing cups of tea with it. My first cup of tea, which is steeping in the photo, is my favorite: peppermint, to be exact. I shall sip it in my friend’s honor.
Thank you, D. It doesn’t matter that we have not yet met in person and that I have not yet seen a photo of you. You have been a true friend over the years and continue to be one. This gift is just a tangible reminder of that fact.
