Every time the Pope does something to treat LGBT people like human beings people act as though this is a marvelous improvement. “There’s hope for this Pope!” The Advocate tweeted today as they reported on his plans to meet with LGBT prisoners. I hate to burst their bubble, but treating LGBT people like human beings who deserve respect, while nice, is the least anyone can do, particularly someone who claims to know or speak for the God of The Bible. This is not news.
The Pope may be willing to meet with LGBT prisoners, but he still does not believe LGBT people are worthy of marriage equality, adoption rights, or any other number of things what would allow LGBT people to operate as fully equal people in society AND the church. Thus, he remains politely homophobic.
Polite homophobia is still homophobia.
