Part 1

It was my turn to dig, again. I had sworn I would stop covering for her the last time she did this, but of course that didn’t happen. I didn’t have the heart. Besides who could say “No” to that face? She had pouted so prettily as she held out the shovel to me and asked for my help.

“You said last time would be the last time.” I scowled.

She scuffed her toe on the carpet and smirked. “I know, but I couldn’t help it. They always find me when I’m weak.”

“Weak, my ass.” I struggled into my boots and tugged moodily at the knot I’d left in the laces the last time I’d hurriedly kicked them off. “And they don’t find you. You go looking for them. That’s how you found me, remember?”

“I remember. But that was diff…”

“Don’t bullshit me.” I knew she hated when I cursed at her. It always knocked the wind out of her. I laced my boots in the sudden silence.

Her voice was low when she finally replied. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to make you mad.”

Damn it, she was going to cry, and I hated to see her cry. “Come here.” I wrapped her up in a tender hug, cursing myself for my own weakness. She had already kicked off her shoes, so she fit into me perfectly, the top of her head barely reaching my shoulders. I kissed her hair. “Listen, you can’t keep doing this. Some day, someone is going to catch you. Digging for you is easy. Saving you from whatever the hell they’ll do to you when they catch you won’t be.” I used a fingertip under her chin to lift her face up to mine. “I don’t want anything to happen to you. You know that.”

“Yeah, I know. That’s why you haven’t deactivated me.”

“You’re making me seriously consider it.”

“You wouldn’t do that. You like me too much.”

I sighed. “That’s an understatement, and you’re lucky it is.” After I kissed her forehead, I let her go and grabbed the shovel. “Where?”

“In the trunk of the car.”

Shaking my head, I unlocked the door. Before I opened it, without turning, I directed a wave of energy behind me. It stopped the energy orb she’d silently flung at me, then expanded it and bounced it back in her direction. By the time I turned around the orb had engulfed her and lifted her off the floor a few inches. Her dark eyes went wide with fright as the life began to drain from her body. I let her remain suspended for a moment or two, then dissipated the orb with a thought. She crumpled to the floor gasping for breath.

I smirked at her. “Naughty naughty. You know better.” I walked over and helped her to her feet. She wobbled for a moment, eyes narrowed, then smiled up at me.

“I’m going to get you one day, woman. You know it as well as I do.”

I licked the tip of her nose and chuckled at her blush. “You wouldn’t. You like me too much.”
