People are sometimes accused of feeling sorry for themselves when they express grief or anger over wrongs (real or perceived) that were done to them. They are told, “You are only feeling sorry for yourself!” as though that is a bad thing. But when they feel pity or empathy for someone else, that is not questioned.
Why then are they looked down upon when they express sorrow/pity for themselves?
When something hurtful or harmful happens to you, of course you will feel sad and/or angry. That is normal, not a moral failing. If anyone tells you otherwise when you express your pain, remove yourself from their presence. Their lack of compassion will only hinder your healing.
