From time to time I see memes which say something to this effect: “No one’s viewpoint has ever been changed by a social media post/meme/debate.” The memes seem to be saying it is a waste of time to discuss, share our opinions about, or even argue about real-world issues on social media. (We’re also told no one is interested in cat videos, what we are wearing that day, or what we had for dinner…which begs the question of what good is social media. But that’s for a different post.) That idea is dismissive of social media as a vehicle by which real communication between real people happens.
Via social media individuals share their thoughts, opinions, ideas, and experiences, and we are able to do it without the (sometimes stifling) corporate oversight of mainstream media. I have been exposed to new ideas and information I might not have otherwise been exposed to. Sometimes after vetting that new information or learning about someone else’s experience I *gasp* decide to change my opinion. My life and my worldview are enriched by these encounters. They keep me coming back to social media in spite of sometimes feeling frustrated with it.
I can’t understand why someone would be on social media, if they don’t feel it is a useful way to exchange information.

One response to “Social Media As a Vehicle for Real Communication”
Like you, I have learned a great deal on social media from people sharing their experiences. This has been especially true in the area of the experiences of people of color, but I’ve also learned a lot about spirituality and being differently abled, both physically and neurologically. I’ve also made some of my most important adult friendships through social media.
