W. Lotus’ Reading List: A Little Heartbreak

131020woodlawn083.jpgI read a few things today that broke my heart. Since I like to spread the pain, I’ll share them with you.

  • Kimberly Knight writes the Patheos blog “Coming Out Christian”. This week she shared a post by a friend of hers, Tripp, who wrote about gender identity, performing music, and how people form opinions about a person’s perceived sexual orientation simply based on what kind of music they perform. Read Shame and Wonder In the Choir Loft.
  • Last month Kimberly shared another guest post, that time by Rachel, entitled Five Things I’ve Learned About Coming Out. While coming out is unique to every person, the things Rachel shared struck a chord with me.
  • Walmart is up to their old tricks: cutting associates’ hours, which means associates have to depend on public assistance just to make ends meet. This is all so Walmart doesn’t have to pay for benefits, we know. Let Walmart know we don’t approve by signing this petition on coworker.org telling Walmart to stop cutting their hours.
  • Ray Jasper is scheduled to be executed in the state of Texas this month. He wrote a letter that took my breath away. In it he describes why sentencing people to prison is the same as sentencing them to slavery, talks about corporations making record profits by locking up people for terms that in no way fit the crime”, and even discusses the difference between empathy and sympathy. It’s an incredible legacy to leave behind after his state-sponsored murder. This letter needs to be part of the curriculum in every sociology class in the nation.
