W. Lotus’ Reading List: Allow Me to Translate for You

Chelsea Manning’s sentencing and publicity about her existence as a trans woman have been all over the news and social media for the past few days. Some people are confused about or not informed about the challenges transgender people face and the ways we should show respect to them. Here are a few links which cover those topics.

  • Transgender women, particularly those of color, are at high risk for violence and murder at the hands of their fellow human beings. Islan Nettles died on Thursday from injuries sustained in a homophobic attack she suffered in Harlem, NY. An arrest has been made, and the charges will probably be upgraded, now that Nettles has died.

  • Randy Roberts Potts wrote on Tumblr about how we as a society need to tear down the walls we have built to separate us from our transgender sisters and brothers. His words are succinct and well put.

  • Finally, Sophia Banks, a trans woman herself, writes her thoughts on the media bias and cissexism apparent in the coverage of Chelsea Manning.

  • Agree or disagree with what Manning did, but do so with respect for her identity.
