Some people are uncomfortable talking about race. But race and the history of race relations in America cannot be easily swept under the rug. The following articles give a little history and a few diverse snippets of life in Black America.
Did you know in 1663 slaves and indentured servants in Gloucester County, Virginia joined forces and revolted against the oppressive ruling class? I never heard about that event until I read NAACP President Ben Jealous’ admonition to never forget that event. They shared the struggle due to class, and race was used as a wedge to keep such an event from happening again. This is proof we are exceedingly powerful together, regardless of race.
Sometimes when considering our history you just have to laugh to keep from crying. “Ask A Slave” is a perfect example of that. My word, the stupid, it burns.
Back to modern days, thank goodness…an enterprising 15-year-old African-American boy started his own tech company and is already a millionaire. Kudos to his parents for guiding him and to him for taking what he has learned and running with it. This goes to show the power of home-schooling African-American kids (even if they go to school outside of the home) and of teaching them how to start and run their own business. These things will help us not just level the playing field but build our own playing fields.
Due to various circumstances, some of us don’t have much of anything, but we still look out for others. Billy Ray Harris is a formerly homeless man who returned a woman’s engagement ring instead of keeping or selling it when she accidentally dropped it into his cup. He has been rewarded handsomely for his honesty, and rightfully so. May he live in peace and comfort for the rest of his days.
