Who Cares About What You Ate?

Say Cheese!I hear people ask that question when they talk about people’s social media habits. “We don’t care what you ate for dinner. Why are you posting selfies? Why do you put the details of your commute online? No one cares.” Then these same people buy tabloids, follow their favorite celebrities on every available social media platform, watch entertainment “news” every night, and quote TMZ as though it is a reliable source.

Double standard much? What makes the pics of what those people ate and the stalker-iffic photos of them getting coffee in the morning more important than the pics of what you ate?

I’ll tell you who cares about what you ate: your fans do. You know: those people who are there cheering you on through the highs and encouraging you through the lows. The people who like you…and click ‘Like’ or ‘+1’ on your social media posts. The people who get you. The people who wish they were you and had your life. Those people.

In their eyes, you are a celebrity.

So go ahead and post those photos of what you ate. Post those selfies, duckface and all. Share snapshots of your daily life. Your fans appreciate the behind-the-scenes looks into your life.

And unlike your critics’ favorite celebrities, you are approachable to your fans.

Selfies are one of the ways my studying-abroad son keeps in touch. And I definitely want to know what he had for dinner — he’s a chef, and those posts make me hungry!
