A Sight for Sore Eyes

I grew up in a conservative, insular, religious environment, so until my mid-30s I had no idea there were Christian churches that affirm and truly accept LGBTQ people. All I knew was the bigotry I would hear from the pulpit seemingly every Sunday. Towards the end of my time in those circles it greatly pained my soul, because that did not feel like the love these same people claimed God is.

Ever since I broke free from those bonds and got out into the real world I have rejoiced whenever I see a church that flies the Pride flag. Even though I am no longer a Christian, seeing that flag flying outside of a church brings me deep joy. It reminds me life is far more colorful, beautiful, and freeing than the suffocating environment I grew up in.
